YOUNG ADULTS |
The Young Adult Area
The Young Adult area on the second floor of the Main Library provides many resources for youth in grades six through twelve. Young Adult Fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. Informational books and movies are shelved together by Dewey Decimal number so that all materials on a specific subject are in the same spot on the shelf. Manga and other comic format books are on the nonfiction shelf. Current magazines appropriate for youth are displayed in the Young Adult area.
Entertainment movies and recordings of books for young adults are interfiled with the adult materials on the first floor, but are distinguished by a “Y” before the call number.
All Young Adult materials may be checked out. All are listed in the Library’s online catalog. Staff at the Information/Young Adult Services desk are always happy to help find materials for personal or school use.
There are Internet computers in the Young Adult area, for use free of charge by library card holders age 21 and under and their accompanying parent or guardian. Children younger than ten must have a parent present to use the Internet computers in the Library.
Programs
The Library offers a variety of programs such as the Anime Club and the Wonderkeepers Next Generation Dramatic Storytelling Workshops year-round. A Summer Reading Program for teens up through age 18 is offered at both buildings. The Downtown Carnegie Library offers a summer marionette performance troupe for young people in grades six through twelve. Students who have completed sixth grade may apply to work as volunteers during the summer.
